The cottages are located in one of the most picturesque locations in England. This is the Eden Valley, found on the eastern side of Cumbria, on the fringe of the Lake District (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Eden Valley is aptly named: it is a haven for peace, tranquillity and a vast variety of wildlife, perfect for ornithologists and country lovers. It is an outstanding area for walking, whether for a hike on the high open fells or a gentle riverside stroll.
The river Eden is nationally renowned for its salmon, trout and grayling fishing. Fishing is available by prior arrangement with the owners.
Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes and the C2C cycle route (from coast to coast or sea to sea) passes nearby. Outdoor activities don’t stop here – why not try canoeing on Ullswater (10 miles), pony trekking or golf in Penrith (6 miles). There are attractions for the whole family including a cruise on Ullswater, a ride on a restored railway high in the North Pennines, and even the opportunity to meet alpacas!
Surrounded by dramatic landscapes including Ullswater and the north eastern fells, both the borders of Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales are close by. This secluded and unspoilt destination will inspire, rejuvenate and refresh visitors at any time of the year. A lively calendar of events adds to a holiday here with festivals of all kinds, country and craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and traditional agricultural shows to name just a few.
The cottages are surrounded by land belonging to Eden Lacy, very much a working farm although much of the land is managed to improve the flora and fauna and their projects have won awards for conservation. As a consequence the surrounding farmland is therefore particularly delightful and walks around the cottages are charming and full of interest. These enhancements to the immediate environment, particularly along the riverbank, have seen an improvement in the populations of many wild animals and sightings of otters, once extremely rare here, are now commonplace. Roe deer also thrive but most of all the Eden Valley is one of the last outposts for the red squirrel and they can be regularly sighted.
Wild flowers abound (the bluebells are quite fabulous in the spring). We look forward to welcoming you to Cumbria’s best kept secret.
